Monkey Hill

Tourist Attraction Phuket Town, Phuket, Thailand

Monkey Hill in Phuket Town is just 30.9 km (or 50 minutes) away from Bismarcks Paradise Phuket luxury villas resort.

While Toh Sae Hill is one of the biggest hills found in Phuket Town, that is not what makes it so unique. Also known as Monkey Hill, this famous Phuket landmark has definitely earned it’s nickname and once you visit you’ll see why.

As mentioned above this wonderfully intriguing hill is located in Phuket Town close to the Phuket Provincial Hall and Provincial Courthouse. The top of the hill is home to a few radio and television stations as well as a favorite recreational spot where locals often come to jog. Mid way up the hill peak is a very basic exercise park with stationary equipment that was revamped in 2015. But the most alluring aspect of Monkey hill is… well, the monkeys!

There are an estimated 400 macaques that live freely in several troops on the hill and certain locals that stop by daily to feed them including one man known as Pae Hog or “Uncle Hog”. This kind and generous local comes daily to play with and feed his mischievous little friends. Although he does feed them separately so there is no fighting or chaos, these adorable monkeys are not the same as the ones you see at most temples and shrines in the sense that they will not approach strangers or become aggressive. However you should still take safety precautions when visiting with small children. It is refreshing to visit with these beautiful and free creatures as so many of Phuket’s Animal tourism is done with forceful captivity such as Tiger Kingdom.

Located at the bottom of Monkey Hill is the aptly named Green Forest Restaurant that offers a selection of cold beverages and Thai cuisine. There is also a small colorful shrine representing 3 “Holy Spirit” (Koh Sae Dang, Koh Sae Dom and Koh Sae khao) that is open daily but most popular on Fridays as the locals come here to pray for good fortune in the lottery.

During the day access to the peak of the hill is quite easy, although very steep, via car or moped with places to stops along the way to take in the breathtaking views. During the evening however access to the peak closes at 5pm; but don’t worry it’s only closed to motor traffic; those who wish to make the hike by foot will still have free passage.
