Surin Beach is a beach on the west coast of the island of Phuket, between Kamala Beach and Bangtao Beach, in Thailand.
Surin Beach is a far cry from being the GO TO PARTY BEACH it formerly was in Phuket. What was once a blossoming strip of beach, with 5 star catering beach vendors, is now a “deserted” sand strip on the ocean between Kamala Beach and the Bang Tao/Laguna complex area where Xana Beach Club or Bliss Beach are more than happy to cater to the former Surin Beach “party and chill all day long” international tourists. The main reason behind the systematic demolition of all the developments, once favored by the rich and famous such as Sharuk Khan, Kate Moss, Rihanna and so on, was as they said: “…not to destroy Phuket but to put things right and honor the royal family…”.
With 800 meters of fine white sands lined with Casuarina trees, Surin Beach incredible natural beauty was first revealed to the world when Thailand’s Royal family visited the beach in the 1950’s. Here we need to dig a little deeper into the country history to understand the reasoning behind it: King Rama VII and his wife built a beach house here in the 1920’s, a well-designed garden and a nine-hole golf course (in fact the first golf course in Phuket, and one of the oldest in the then Siam) along the beach-side strip. The house was at the time frequently used by the King, his wife and their guests. Members of the royal family kept on coming to Surin long after King Rama VII passed away. On Sunday March 8th in 1959, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, accompanied by his wife Queen Sirikit, came to a visit in Phuket; and the following Monday, after the King and the Queen visited the Provincial Hall, they left for Surin Beach.
This was one of the reason why Surin Beach was scaled down on business development and allowed to regain its place as one of the most natural and picturesque beach on the island.Related Links: Phuket Beaches | Tourist Spots | Nearby Surin Tourist Spots
