Chinese Shrines

Phuket, Thailand

Read Introduction

During the 1800's the tin mining on Phuket was so rich that it drew in many migrants seeking job opportunities and wealth. Due to the large number of Chinese migrants living in Thalang it was agreed in 1901 that they should have a holy place to pray and as such the first of many Chinese shrines was erected.

With over 18 shrines located all over the island these beautiful temples are hard to miss. With their popular yellow and red colours and images of animals such as dragons, lions and monkeys strategically placed on and around the structure, these holy temples play a pivotal role in both Chinese and Thai culture.

Drawing in large crowds for most Chinese holidays, most notably Chinese New Years, the shrines honour the ancient traditions of the sacred holiday by setting off firecrackers and decorating with red banners and symbols. Many Chinese tourist and expats come to make their yearly prayers for wealth, happiness and prosperity.

The Chinese Shrines also play a key role in the Vegetarian festival, a tradition introduced into Thai culture by a travelling Chinese Opera group and growing in popularity throughout the years. The festival starts on the eve of the ninth lunar moon and goes on for 9 days, during which attendees dress all in white and feast on various vegetarian dishes while praying to the Nine Emperor Gods.
