Events & Festivals

Phuket, Thailand

Events & Festivals: festivities and religious traditions spice up the year in Phuket. The main nationwide festivals are Songkran (Thai New Year in April), Loy Krathong (in November), and Chinese New Year (end of January, early February).

In addition to these, Phuket also hosts four notable events or local festivals every year: the world-famous nine-day-long Phuket Vegetarian Festival (really a religious festival for nine important Chinese gods) – usually around October; and the Phuket Bike Week (in April) as well as a gay-pride extravaganza around the same time as well as the Phuket King's Cup Regatta which was inaugurated on 5th December 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty the King. It has been held annually every year since, during the first week of December, in honour of His Majesty who graciously agreed to be the Patron of the event.

Besides these major local festivals, the cosmopolitan atmosphere on the island includes Christmas, the Gregorian calendar New Year, and Valentine’s Day, to name but just a few. In short, Thai folks love to party!
